Classes of antonyms according to their meaning
In this video I will explain the classes of antonyms according to their meaning and form.
Classes of antonyms according to their meaning:
- TOgradual nonyms: the opposition between the terms admits intermediate terms, a scale or gradation
- Reciprocal antonyms: the opposition is not strict but they are mutually presupposed terms, that is, they imply each other.
- Complementary antonyms: The opposition does not admit gradation or a mutual presupposition in time, but rather an exclusion: either one is dead or alive.
Classes of antonyms according to their form:
- Lexical antonyms: They are those that are generated by totally different lexemes: cold / hot, love / hate, democratic / authoritarian.
- negation or grammatical antonyms formed with negative prefixes.
In the video you will find a more detailed explanation of the types of antonyms with examples from each of them.
