Biography of Ziraldo

A origin of the artist: a family and a life born in the inner city

Ziraldo Alves Pinto was born in Caratinga (interior of Minas Gerais), on October 24, 1932, filho of dona Zizinha and do seu Geraldo. Além de Ziraldo, Zizinha and Geraldo also had another film: Zélio Alves Pinto (1938), an artist, also a journalist, cartoonist and writer.

Start da carreira

Years of seven years Ziraldo publishes his first cartoon in A Cigarra magazine, where he will do more collaborations) and he moves to Rio de Janeiro where he begins to disseminate his works in the publications Child Life, Youth Life and Sesinho.

During his graduation he collaborates monthly with the magazine Era uma vez. In 1954, he started a partnership as a Binômio e salary with Folha de Minas, replacing the cartoonist Borjalo.

Ascension on the road

Three years later, living in Rio de Janeiro, he started working for the O Cruzeiro magazine. His personagem Pererê faced so much success that the newspaper decided to launch a magazine dedicated to him.

In 1963 he goes to the Jornal do Brasil and, not to follow, he also works in the Pif-Paf magazine.

International career

In 1968 his work became an international success story and began to be published in foreign magazines.

Ziraldo's works have only recently been translated into English, Spanish, Italian, French, Korean and Basque.

Ziraldo was two collaborators of the famous O Pasquim journal, launched in 1969, in full military status.

Academic training

In 1952, Ziraldo entered the Faculdade de Direito da UFMG, where he was formed in 1957, but has been practiced in Jamaica.

To produce or use artistic material, Ziraldo did not have any kind of formal education. self-taught influenced by big hair nomes do humor like Ronald Searle, André François, Manzi and Steinberg. In terms of plastic arts, Ziraldo cites Picasso, Miró and Goya as the main influences.

Pessoal life

In 1958 Ziraldo married Vilma Gontijo Alves Pinto after seven years of love. O casal teve três filhos (Daniela Thomas - a filmmaker -, Fabrizia e Antônio - composer).

Vilma passed away 66 years after more than four decades of union. Abalado com a perda e sem know how to approach or assunto da morte com a neta Nina, Ziraldo escreveu or livro Menina Nina: Two reasons not to chore (2002).
