Study results

In this research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, 60 women collaborated and were presented with a series of photographs of men with different hair types.

Some had hair, others only showed a little hair and others were completely shaved. In the first part of the study, the participants had to analyze the photographs and rate how they perceived them according to whether they seemed dominant, agreeable, and how old they appeared to be.

To really check if bald men are more attractive and that the personal characteristics of each subject are not interfere, in a second part of the study the heads were digitally retouched, adding hair to those that previously did not have and vice versa.

The experiment was forceful. The men shown hairless were considered a year older, a little nicer and a lot more dominant, showing that there are differences in the way they are valued depending on whether they have hair or not.

Are there reasons for this result?

Researchers have their hypotheses about the motives behind these results. One of the explanations they find is that shaved heads are unusual, moving away from the mainstream and making them attractive.

Another reason is that men with baldness who decide to bet on shaving their heads completely, in instead of opting for hair implants, they show themselves as self-confident and unapologetic people, attractive characteristics in a man.

However, it was not all good news for hairless men. These results do not necessarily imply that bald men are more attractive. The researchers also found that men with fully shaved heads were considered less attractive than men with hair. In the same way, men with baldness were perceived to be older.

Although this last fact may seem discouraging, the truth is that many other studies support that bald men can be more attractive. Having less hair adds years and it is a sign of old age, but for Frank Muscarella, psychologist at Barry University in the United States You have done your research on the matter, this can be an advantage.

According to Muscarella, old age is not attractive, but it is usually associated with high social and economic status, characteristic that is attractive to women. Therefore, even if they do not have physical attractiveness, the association with that social status can add attractiveness to them.

Another highlight for Muscarella is that baldness stands out as a trait that stands out above others, a fact that is also only characteristic in men. This distinction, in biological terms, can act as a sign of attraction towards females. This differential signal is also associated with dominance and more opportunities for reproduction.

In 2010 the Seattle School of Medicine, part of the University of Washington, conducted a study in which they found that men who went bald at younger ages they had a 45% lower risk of developing prostate cancer. Men who had bald spots or patches on the crown had the lowest risk of cancer.

All or nothing

In a third phase of the experiment at the University of Pennsylvania, they repeated the process but without photos and based only on descriptions. This time they also added men with little hair but without being completely bald. Again, completely bald or shaven men were seen as more dominant, masculine, strong and with greater leadership capacity.

The fact of being shaved increases the aspect of security and confidence that is so seductive for women. This indicates that bald men are more attractive and that, since they are a little, it is better to go all the way and shave completely.
