The Caribbean is the name by which the Caribbean Sea, all the islands that are located in it and the coasts that surround the sea. Therefore we can say that the countries that are part of the Caribbean are all those islands that live all along this sea, but also all those countries whose coasts are bathed by Caribbean water, such as certain South American or Central American countries.

Its location is north of South America, east of Central America, and southeast of North America. For all this it is a region of great American influence, there are many countries in these regions that we call Caribbean because their coasts are bathed by the Caribbean Sea.

Regarding its expansion, we can differentiate two data, those that speak of its land surface, and those that include the entire area that we call the Caribbean. Being the land surface of 235,996 km2 and the surface counting everything we call the Caribbean of 2,754,000 km2. This whole area is populated by 43,888,319 inhabitants, which gives us approximately 195 inhabitants per km2. Some of the most populated cities in this area are Santo Domingo, Caracas and San Juan.

Within the vast space that is the Caribbean, we can speak of a series of island groups, some groups of islands that receive their own name, these being the following:

  • Greater Antilles: A group of islands in the northern Caribbean, which is made up of some of the largest islands in the entire Caribbean. These islands are Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
  • Lesser Antilles: They are a group of small islands that form an arc to the south of the Greater Antilles. These islands are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

List with the countries and capitals of the Caribbean.

When talking about the different countries and capitals of the Caribbean, we must bear in mind that countries are states with full autonomy, which do not depend on a different state. The Caribbean is an area with many dependencies, since there are still echoes of the colonial past of the area, being a region where the states Europeans had many colonies, due to the islands possessing a number of very valuable resources a few centuries ago, such as the sugar. Many of the islands have not become fully independent of the European states, which is why they are currently called dependencies.

In this section we are not going to talk about dependencies, but about what we call sovereign states, being countries that have total autonomy. To talk about them we are going to divide them into two parts, dividing them into those countries that are islands, and all those that are continental states but that have islands or coasts bathed by the Sea Caribbean.
