Crying: what does it imply on a psychological level?

Usually, we associate the tears with the feeling of sadness. However, it is also true that we can cry with joy.

From a psychological point of view, crying is healthy, since it is an escape route through which to release tension and anguish. When we cry we vent, and after that we can even see things from another point of view: with more serenity and calm.

Logically, when crying is related to constant victimizing behaviors, or simply when we are talking about people who can never contain themselves, this is not healthy either, from a point of view psychological.

Having said all this, we must bear in mind that all people, to a greater or lesser extent, have cried at some time in their life -or practically all-, and that it should be as natural an act as breathing. But, what happens when we go beyond “real life”, and we transfer the cry to the dream world? What does it mean to dream that you cry? Do you think it says something about your personality?

We are going to discover it through this article, and from the hand of different authors in dream literature and the world of dreams.

Dreaming that you cry: what does it mean and what does it tell us about our personality?

We review the literature of the dream world to understand what it means to dream that you cry. In Luis Trujillo's book, "Interpretation of dreams" (Editorial Libsa), The author explains that behind the dreamlike image of crying (or tears), hides the need to be consoled.

This meaning is associated with dreams where it is the person himself who cries, about himself. Thus, crying in dreams is related to the fact that we are sensitive people and that we need help at one point or another in our lives.

Behind this image, but, adds Trujillo, many meanings are also hidden as the action unfolds. In this way, dreams where it is another person who cries (the dreamer sees the tears on the other's face), this is interpreted in the following way: our actions are causing pain in others.

On the other hand, the fact of contemplating the fall of the tears without any feeling of sorrow or pain predominates, means that great joys will soon come.

Other authors, such as Anna Monteschi, author of "The great book of dreams" (Editorial De Vecchi), explain that sDreaming that you cry is related to great sensitivity, and with the receipt of good news. The author, but, still specifies more, and adds a series of variations that we will see later.

What does it tell us about our personality?

As we have seen, dreaming that you cry says a lot about the dreamer. Thus, people who cry in dreams are often sensitive people. It is also frequent that when you dream that you cry, it is because we need help, or that they comfort us.

In addition, the act of crying, according to Trujillo, is a symbol of fertility and inner wealth. That is, tears in dreams are related to people with a complex, stimulating, deep and rich inner world.

Different types of dreams with crying

Now yes, let's see some examples of dreams that involve crying, as well as its meaning (s).

1. Cry with joy

When we think of the act of crying, we associate it with sad emotions and moments, but, you can also cry with joy (and dream about it)! Thus, crying with joy has to do with having finished a very sad period of life (or stage) in “real life”. In this way, it is related to a time of happiness and well-being that is yet to come.

2. Cry for someone's death

If in the dream we appear crying for the death of someone, it means that we are in a favorable period of our life, but that it will end soon.

Other authors attribute the following meaning to this dream: we are finally overcoming a grief (for example, due to the death of a loved one) in which we had become stagnant.

3. Cry for your own mistakes

To dream that you cry for mistakes made in the past, means that we are showing passive behavior and a certain predisposition to give up certain things while awake.

4. Cry for nothing

If, on the other hand, we appear in the dream crying for no apparent reason, Monteschi relates it to a period of life full of sadness and displeasure. Thus, dreaming that you cry for nothing has a negative meaning.

5. Cry of grief

We may dream that we cry, but also, with great sorrow accompanying the moment. According to Trujillo, dreaming that we experience a feeling of sorrow, beyond crying, without there being an event that produces it or a tremendous associated pain (chemically pure), it can be a consequence of having gone through a very sad experience or very traumatic.

This experience may have left us a deep "footprint" in the subconscious, recorded in the memory, with a high degree of associated emotion; thus, said emotion remains hidden in the folds of memory, until it emerges through dreams, Trujillo also specifies.

On the other hand, in the opinion of Monteschi, the other expert in the dream world, dreaming that we experience a moment of great pain has to do with moments of vital crisis.

6. Handkerchiefs

If in the dream, in addition to dreaming that you cry, handkerchiefs also appear, this image is associated with a period of sadness that we are experiencing, or that will come soon.

An escape valve?

We have seen what it can mean to dream that you cry in different situations. But, What sense could this type of dream have in "real life"?

Beyond the mentioned authors, other authors of the dream world attribute to the fact of dreaming that you cry, a more positive meaning than those commented, and relate this fact to a release of tension and worries that we may have in our "conscious" life or lucid.

A) Yes, crying in dreams in a way can also mean an escape valve for us, which is activated in dreams either because during our "real" life we are unable to activate it, or because we repress this action out of fear, shame, unconsciously, etc.

On the other hand, already in the field of psychology, Sigmund Freud gave special relevance to dreams and their interpretation.

Following the line of Freudian theory, we see the same as the above, and we can relate dreams where we appear crying with repressed and unconscious emotions, which in “real life” we are incapable of expressing or of manage. That is why, through dreams and the dream world, our unconscious has “carte blanche” to express itself.
