The 4 EVANGELISTS and their SYMBOLS

Out of all bible characters Some that stand out from the rest are the evangelists, being those religious characters who wrote the so-called Gospels that were so important to understand the life of Jesus. To know life and the main elements that we relate to them in this lesson from a PROFESSOR, we are going to talk about the four evangelists and their symbols.

Before listing the evangelists and talking about the main elements that we should know about them, let's briefly explain who are evangelists and what do they do in order, thus, to understand its relevance in religious history.

The evangelists are those characters who wrote the ^Gospels, that is, those bible texts who are in charge of narrating the adventures of Jesus, being four texts located in the New Testament and that bear the names of each of the evangelists.

The word evangelist comes from a term that means "people who proclaim good news", since in religion Christianity, the good news is considered to be the arrival of God into the earthly world and its many Actions.

We must bear in mind that since all evangelists are followers of Jesus, there are many repeated stories in their Gospels, with very few cases in which one of the authors speak of something different and that does not appear in the writings the rest.

Mateo is one of the evangelists, being called among other names Matthew the Apostle or Matthew Levi. He was one of the 12 Apostles that Jesus chose to spread his word throughout the world and, for this reason, that in his Gospel tells many of the stories of Jesus when he was close to the Apostles.

Matthew was Tax collector in the fishing town of Capernaum, but it is said that when summoned by Jesus to follow his exploits he renounced his entire life to follow the Messiah. After Jesus' death, the sources differ greatly about his life: some speak of him continuing to preach in Judea, others speak of his march to Ethiopia where he was martyred, while others speak of his death in the city of Hierapolis in I left.

Mark the Evangelist, considered the author of the Gospel of Mark and founder and bishop of the Alexandria Church how important it was to the history of Christianity.

Born in North Africa, Cyprus or Jerusalem, depending on the sources we consult, his story begins to be told in the Acts of the Apostles. It was Marcos who accompanied Pablo de Tarso and Bernabé on his first trip and only the second on the next trip. The other stories we know of him tell of him being a faithful follower of Saint Peter and that he traveled to Alexandria to spread Christianity.

Symbols of the Evangelist Mark

The symbol that is usually used to represent Marcos is that of a winged lion who sometimes carries a book and a sword. Used as a symbol of the city of Venice, it is considered that the meaning of the lion originates from the beginning of the Gospel. of Mark, when John the Baptist speaks of a roar in the desert that some associate with the roar of a mighty lion.

To continue this lesson on the four evangelists and their symbols we must talk about the one considered as the evangelist smartest of the group. Luke the Evangelist he was a doctor of Turkish origin known for writing the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles but also for having been one of the most relevant disciples by Pablo de Tarso.

Originating within the group of 72 people who followed Jesus, Luke is said to have asked dozens of people during his life to be able to write his Gospel and Acts, being therefore one of the texts of the Bible with greater number of sources, so he is considered the most cultured evangelist. The end of his life is not totally certain, but it is said that he could be martyred by being hanged on an olive tree in the Greek city of Thebes.

The symbol that has always been used to represent Lucas has been an ox or bull, sometimes being winged. The use of the bull is because the Gospel of Luke begins by talking about the sacrifice of Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, and is therefore used at bull or ox to represent that all Christians should be prepared to sacrifice themselves before God.

John the evangelist is one of the biblical characters less known, There are few sources on its existence and causing this to exist a huge amount of theories about who it could be. According to some studies, John could be the author of the Gospel of John, of the Apocalypseand three Epistles.

The symbol of the Evangelist John is that of an eagle, It is considered that the use of the bird to represent John has two senses, the first being that he is an Evangelist who uses more the symbolism and theology and therefore looks higher than the rest, but it also serves to show the Ascension that will take place in the Apocalypse.
