Consequences of the First World War

This is the latest video on the First World War. Here I will explain basically two things: the peace treaty that ended the conflict (the Treaty of Versailles) and the consequences of the First World War.

After the Imperialist Party surrendered the War, on January 18, 1919 the representatives of the Allied Party met in the Paris conference which was chaired by the Committee of four (consisting of the leaders of the United States, France, Great Britain and Italy). Each of the representatives of the Committee made different requests to avoid future conflicts and for Germany to pay for what she had done in the war. These requests and many more were the clauses of the Treaty of Versailles.

The First World War had a series of consequences fatal:

  • extreme material destruction, especially in France and Belgium: farmland, the railway network, bridges, roads, ...
  • The industries that had been destined for war production for years had to be converted.
  • some countries benefited economically from the war. Basically, those who had remained neutral and had been suppliers of raw materials (Brazil, Argentina and Spain)

  • the war consolidated two great world powers (the United States and Japan)
  • social consequences: incorporation of women into the world of work and impoverishment of the middle class.
  • Germany had to compensate the most affected countries with exorbitant sums of money.
  • the four great empires that existed at the end of the War disappeared and gave rise to Republics: German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and Russian empires.
  • Bolshevik revolution (Russia) was the first that resulted in the birth of a communist state
  • postwar society had a severe crisis of conscience and many ex-combatants felt very bad because they were excluded from working life.

You have all this explanation in much more detail in the video and accompanied by images that will make it easier for you to understand the consequences of the First World War.

In addition, you can do the printable exercises with their solutions I have left you on the web to check if you have understood everything.
