In some plants the gene involved in the development of these organs doubled to create two quite similar copies. After analyzing the evolution of the different species of flowering plants, it has been concluded that this duplication took place 120 million years ago.
The use of this gene in different ways depending on the plant is due to an amino acid, genes are very similar but their proteins do not always have this amino acid. If this amino acid exists, the protein can only make male parts, while if it is not it is capable of be related to other genes involved in flower production, and this makes it possible to develop male organs and female.
