One of the important lessons you have to learn requires that you learn to recognize what types of texts are there and what are they. By defining its meaning and purpose, you will be able to recognize whenever you see any writing to which type it belongs. Because every writer, when facing a narrative, has to use a fundamental tool, and that is the definition of the purpose of the writing to know what type of text to use. To do this, it must provide the writing with coherence and unity of a linguistic character in all the statements and in the internal structure. Descriptive text.
We begin to know what types of texts there are and which are the main ones. And the first one we address in today's lesson is the descriptive text. This is based on the definition of something, be it a person, an object, a situation or any other type.
In this type of text, the emphasis is on definition and detail, since it looks for a vision of the described thing that adapts as much as possible to the reality.
Descriptive text is one of the kinds of text that is not only useful for describing something tangible, it is also used for something intangible, such as a situation, a sound, etc. It can even be used for a sensation, for example the answer to the question How are you
Obviously, the text can be very deep, and the more it is, the more accurate and truthful it is. Within this we can distinguish between the technical and the literary. The first focuses on data, the second is more personal.
Narrative text.
The second most important text is the narrative, which is based on the explanation of facts, whether fictitious or real, always established in a given space and time.
In this case, the narrative can cover everything from landscapes to descriptions of people, situations, events, arguments, etc. In addition, they can use very different formulas to narrate, although they mainly use the verse and prose.
In general, these types of texts consist of three different parts, which are the approach, the middle and the outcome:
- Approach: it is the beginning of the text where the story is located and the characters and conflicts are presented.
- Knot: the main trunk of the story where the narration and situations take place, posing main questions for the text.
- Outcome: it is the end, where all the plots are resolved reaching the climax or high point to discover the unknowns and establish the conclusions.
In this other lesson we will discover what is the structure of a narrative text. In addition, here you can also know the characteristics of a narrative text.
Other types of texts.
In addition to the kinds of texts that we have already seen and which are the most common and most used, there are other types of texts that must be known and distinguished:
- Argumentative text: it is a text whose purpose is to reject or defend an idea, a project or a thought. Its objective is to convince whoever reads it that the stipulated arguments are valid and give the reason to whoever writes it. In terms of structure, there is an introduction and a body.
- Expositive text: used to present or clarify meanings, so that it is reported objectively without a clear subjective point of view. There are two types of information, informative, with topics of general interest to those who read, and technical, with very specific knowledge on a topic.
- Literary text: seeks an aesthetic purpose and captures the reader's attention. It can be narrative, dramatic, lyrical, etc. In addition, there are many forms of elocution, ranging from speech to dialogue or narration.

More technical types of texts.
In addition, we can find other types of texts more focused on technical language, although today they have changed and evolved into other forms:
- Cientific text: text associated with science full of technicalities related to the writer's research branch. That is, it uses a specialized and complex language to express the subjects of study. It moves away from subjectivity, goes to the concrete and uses numerous citations and bibliographic sources.
- Humanistic text: it is complex to explain, since its content deals with the study of the human being and the human sciences, such as philosophy, anthropology, psychology or sociology, for example. It can be associated with the scientific text, but it could also be written subjectively, providing opinions.
- Journalistic text: in the past it was associated with an informative function, so that it had to relate an event as it was with total objectivity. Texts written as News and that they offered objective information. But today there are also other types, such as the opinion column or the entertainment column. It can be used in both written and oral media and focuses on the present, using understandable and close language free of technicalities that the reader cannot understand.
