We traditionally call text to a set of sentences that form a single textual unit, but a text is not only that. To be able to talk about a text, it is necessary that the group of sentences that compose it be structured in a coherent way. The textual coherence It is one of the essential properties that every text must meet, since in order to communicate through them we need the information to be organized and cohesive.

In this lesson from a PROFESSOR we review one of the elements necessary for the thematic progression that unites a discourse to exist: the row. Keep reading and then you will know what is the row of a text with several examples.

As we have pointed out in the introduction, a text is a communicative unit made up of several sentences transmitted from one speaker to another in a given linguistic situation.

Traditionally we call these communicative units text when they are written, but this is not always the case, since they are also We can speak of texts of an oral nature, since they are also coherent and cohesive sets of sentences.

By definition, a text has full meaning; that is, it is syntactically and linguistically autonomous.

For this to be so, the text must have the following characteristics:

  • Adaptation to the communicative context in which it is issued, adapting to the level of the interlocutor and to the formal or informal characteristics of the communicative situation.
  • Textual coherence: The ideas present in the text must be coherent with each other and be logically related to the overall meaning of the text.
  • Textual cohesion: the information that is transmitted in a text must be linked in a logical and progressive way. For this, a series of linguistic particles are used for this purpose, which are called connectors or markers. discursive, which allow us to logically link the information in each of the paragraphs that make up our text.

Within textual coherence, we find a fundamental element in the structure of all textual: he rows. He rows it is the new information that is provided in a text. It is directly opposed to the topic (the information known to the participants of the speech).

In a text there may be a single row or, as is more usual, several linked rows. In general, in each paragraph of the text, through cohesion mechanisms (and discursive markers) they are introduced new rows to enrich the text.

One of the properties that all remas must meet is be closely related to the topic of the text, since if it were not so, there would be no textual coherence since in each paragraph would speak of something completely different and this would hinder the communicative intention of the text.

To prevent this from happening, the succession of themes must be logical and coherent. This characteristic, which must be inherent to every textual unit, is known as the thematic progression, and is the form in which the different remas are linked to each other and also how they are linked directly or indirectly with the main theme of the text.

In this other lesson from a TEACHER we will discover the differences between theme and rema so that you better understand both concepts.
