We continue with the video lessons in spelling, one of the most complicated aspects of the Spanish Language. Here we will explain the rules for the use of the V in order to thus learn to write and not to make mistakes in Spanish. Many times, we confuse b with v since they have the same voiced lip sound. However, in order not to be mistaken there are a series of spelling rules that the Royal Spanish Academy lists. In this lesson from a PROFESSOR we tell you the spelling rules of V and, in addition, we offer you printable exercises with their solutions so you can practice what we have learned.
Learning to write in Spanish is not always easy. Especially when we are faced with two sounds that are similar and that have different spelling rules. This is what happens with the V and the B, two very similar sounds but they have to be written taking into account the rules stipulated by the Royal Spanish Academy.
To help you in your homework and in your exams, in a PROFESSOR we offer you a list with
the 10 rules of using the V that you have to know to learn to write correctly. You should not confuse them with those of the use of B because they are very different. Here they are!- The present indicative, subjunctive and imperative of the verb IR goes with V (go, go, go ...)
- The pret. indefinite, imperfect and future subjunctive of BE, WALK AND HAVE (I was, I walked, I had, etc.)
- Adjectives with endings in -ava, -ave, -avo, -eva, -eve, -evo, -iva, -ivo they go with V. Example: new, short, soft, serious, etc. -
- It is written V after D. For example: adversary, warn, adverse, and so on.
- The use of V also occurs in prefixes such as vice-, villa, villar-. For example: vice president, Villareal, etc.
- The endings in -viro / a, -ivore / a. Example: herbivore, Elvira, etc. - Exception: viper goes with B.
- Words that end in -serve or -verse they also go with V. Example: observe, talk, preserve, observe...
- Verbs that they have neither V nor B in the infinitive are written with V. Example: I had, I walked, I was... - Exception: the pret. imperf. indicative of endings in -ba, -bas, -we, -bais, ban, are written with B.
- Words that go preceded by B, D and N they always go with V. For example: winter, adverse, convert, and so on.
- The words that they start with div- they always go with V. Example: ramble, diversity, divide, divine, etc. Exception: drawing and all its derivatives (drawing, draftsman ...).
